Choosing EZWLZ

What are the advantages and disadvantages of the motor position on the electric bike?

The EZWLZ commuter models are equipped with a powerful, reliable rear wheel motor from Yamaha.

Engine type Benefits Cons
Front wheel
  • Cheap to buy
  • Simple technique
  • Low maintenance costs
  • Suitable for flat terrain and city use
  • Can sometimes be built into existing bikes
  • Less natural support
  • Less grip on wet roads (towing front wheel)
  • Heavier rear due to luggage carrier battery
  • Less suitable for hills and strong headwinds
Bottom bracket
  • Natural and powerful support
  • Good weight distribution (stable and safe)
  • Good for hills, longer rides and trekking
  • Efficient use of energy, often longer range
  • Much more expensive to buy
  • Higher maintenance costs (chain/sprockets wear out faster)
  • More complex technology, repairs often more expensive
  • Sometimes more engine noise
  • Significantly heavier motor and battery
Rear wheel
  • Strong and direct pushing ride feel
  • Often quiet and low-maintenance
  • Good traction when accelerating
  • Hybrid driving, with and without assistance
  • Without turning on the engine, the bike rides like a regular bike, just as smoothly.
  • Suitable for sporty city bikes and commuters
  • Cheaper than mid-drive motor
  • Much lighter than mid-engine
  • Removing the wheel more difficult in the event of a flat tire

The weight depends mainly on the location of the engine. In the table below you can see that the front and rear engine are the
lightest. The mid-engine is clearly heavier. So think carefully about what you want to use the bike for when choosing.

The EZWLZ commuter models are light and weigh around 22kg.

Engine type Avg. Weight eBike Engine weight Battery position Driving feel Notes
